Daddy dearest #MURDERMYSTERYMONDAY PT. 1

Now some women have daddy issues and that leads them to do crazy things, but I didn’t know drugging your “friend” and letting your father rape and torture her was one of them.

Welcome to another night of #MurderMysteryMonday. Tonight we’re going to talk about the Toy box killer (No this has nothing to do with children, thank goodness) David Parker Ray.

You may be wondering why he’s called the toy box killer if there are no children involved. Well let me tell ya! Our sick friend here soundproofed his trailer truck and called it his “toy box.” Inside it were contraptions he made from scratch to inflict pain while forcefully penetrating his victims. (Again BDSM lovers this has nothing to do with you, this man is just twisted.)

What makes this whole thing worse is the fact that he had help from his girlfriend AND his daughter (Yes you read that correctly.) David was married four times and only had two children. His daughter “Jessie” wasn’t that close to him (but close enough to lure victims to daddy smh)

As for the girlfriend, how do you sleep at night knowing your significant other has a woman with a spiked collar and is torturing her? (Ughh the world we live in.)

Okay let’s take it from the top shall we? Apparently Ray had murdered at least one woman a year since the age of 14. (Well this is what he claimed.) On March 19 1999, he posed as an undercover police officer and “arrested” Cynthia Vigil in a parking lot after offering to pay her twenty bucks for a blow job.

Once placed in his RV, Ray’s girlfriend, Cindy helped to gag and tie Cynthia up and placed a spiked metal collar on her. After driving for over an hour they get to the trailer and chain Cynthia to a bed post.

Then our sick friend played a FOURTY minute recording of himself describing what was about to take place. He apparently played this tape for all of his victims. The tape opens with the words, “Hello there bitch” (Are we surprised? We shouldn’t be.) The tape goes on to say that the woman was now enslaved for forced sex and she could only address him as “Master” and his girlfriend (or whoever was with him that day) as “mistress.” She would be naked and treated as a dog, tortured, have sex with animals and be participating in anal sex. Now he thought that this recording would “hypnotize” these women and as stated in the tape it was created on July 23, 1993 as a “general advisory” for all of his future victims.

In the “Toy box” there were mantras and notes written on how a victim would behave while in captivity and for him to not give in. Statements such as “they will cry, beg, offer money, do not give in.”

Cynthia was raped repeatedly, subjected to being shocked and whipped. She knew it was a matter of time before she was going to die. On the third day of her captivity, Ray had went to work and left his girlfriend Cindy baby sitting Cynthia (I know the “Cin” names are a bit confusing but bare with me.)

Apparently Cindy received a phone call and Cynthia then noticed the keys for her chains were left on the side table. Cindy then heard the noise and made her way over to Cynthia and tried to knock her out. The two fought and Cynthia used a nearby ice pick (because it’s totally normal to have one laying around.) and stabbed Cindy on the side of her head. Naked and with a collar on Cynthia ran to the road and tried to flag down civilians for help and no one payed her any mind.

Afraid that her captors would soon find her she ran into an open trailer and asked the homeowner for help. The lady called police and they took Cynthia to the hospital. At first they didn’t believe her because of the fact that she was a known prostitute and had a history of drug abuse. But while in the hospital guess who walked in to be treated? Yup – Cindy! The crazy girlfriend, at this point Cynthia is screaming to police that , that was the lady she got into it with. They question Cindy and then head over to the home and find that there were signs of a struggle and Cynthia’s story seems to be credible.

Thomas Benke: Looking Around In Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott, in the Chapter “Looking Around,” says this: Now, if you ask me, what’s going on is that we’re all up to here in it, and probably the most important thing is that we not yell at one another. Otherwise we’d all just be barking away like Pekingese: “Ah! Stuck in the shit! And it’s your fault, you did this …” Writing involves seeing people suffer and, as Robert Stone once put it, finding some meaning therein. But you can’t do that if you’re not respectful. If you look at people and just see sloppy clothes or rich clothes, you’re going to get them wrong. She goes on to speak about empathy for other people and also, as an extension empathy for yourself. So, in a sense as you try to write believable, relatable characters, you will come to forgive people their trespasses—because no one believes they are the villain of their story, so you have to write “bad,” or “evil” characters from a point of view where they rationalize what they are doing in such a way that it is the right or only way they see is possible. By extrapolation, then, if you begin to forgive and withhold judgment from your less-than-desirable, or annoying characters, perhaps you can extend the same courtesy to yourself and forgive your own trespasses and sins. This, for me, starts to enter the realm of “writing as therapy,” and though I am a firm believer in that—I practice it to this very day—I think I would caution anyone who thinks that simply writing through things is going to lead you to a place of light and love. I am not saying it can’t by any means. What I am saying is I have wrote through my thoughts and my problems and my desperation and depression for decades and I still had enough baggage on my shoulders to supply an army platoon with rations for a year. In any case, when thinking about craft, it is very important to step into the shoes of all of your characters, especially those characters that you see as antagonists and villians. I believe there are very few universal maxims in writing but one thing is virtually certain: every character you write is your version of that human being. Confucius said “everywhere I go, there I am,” and that is never more true than when you are writing. So if you are writing a character that is distasteful to you, it might be effective for you to ask yourself why that is the case. I wrote a blog for Obscura last semester titled, “The Puppy Had It Coming.” The gist of the article was to pose a puzzle to writers. How can you write a scene where an adult human kicks a puppy across the room and the reader at least understands why. I am not saying there is any way to justify the action or for the readers to be on the human’s side unless they are sociopaths. I am saying you need let the reader know how dark the place is in the character’s mind that he is capable of doing that.
